Seattle container volumes jump Container volumes at the Port of Seattle were up 14 percent in August compared to one year ago, officials report Seattle handled 133,440 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo in August, compared to 117,167 TEUs in August 1999. For the first eight months of this year, Seattle has handled 985,729 TEUs, the port said. Port officials attribute the sharp increase for August-which was the largest single-month increase this year-to strong two-way traffic in the Asia trades. Full-container import volumes from Asia were up 17 percent compared to last August, while full export TEUs were up 13 percent "This is promising news for our region - an area with stronger ties to the world economy than any other region in the United States," commented Steve Sewell, managing director of the port's Marine Division. "This peak season shipping surge brings Seattle growth in Asian cargo numbers in line with volumes that other West Coast ports are experiencing:' He attributed part of the increase to inbound intermodal shipments destined for the Southeast that were diverted to Seattle this year instead of moving through ports in Southern California. "Shippers are finding that we are able to move cargo through the Port of Seattle much more quickly and efficiently than the overcrowded ports in South California can;' Sewell said.
