October 16, 2000 Hyundai revises PNW service

Hyundai Merchant Marine has revised the schedule on its Pacific Northwest (PNW) service, dropping three calls to cut transit times between the remaining ports. Hyundai is no longer making direct calls at Kwangyang, Korea and Kobe, Japan. It has also revised its outbound schedule from North America, making a single call at Tacoma instead of doubling back for a second call when vessels are in the Pacific Northwest port range.

Under the new schedule, Hyundai is still making Tacoma its first inbound call from the Far East. But vessels will go from Tacoma to Vancouver, B.C. and then down to a final PNW call at Portland, rather than making Tacoma both the first inbound and last outbound call. The port rotation in the Far East is Yokohama, Busan, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, and a final outbound call at Busan. Kwangyang and Kobe will be served by transshipment.

Officials noted the new schedule reduces transit times between several direct call ports. The outbound transit time to Busan has been reduced to 13 days from Portland and 15 days from Vancouver. Transit time to Hong Kong has been cut to 16 days from Portland and 18 days from Vancouver.

Eastbound, transit times to Vancouver are down to 14 days from Kaohsiung and 15 days from Hong Kong. Transit times to Portland are down to 16 days from Kaohsiung and 17 days from Hong Kong.

"Reduced trransit times to and from the Far East allow Hyundai to offer better service to customers in the U.S. Northwest," a company statement said.
