Norfolk Southern Enters Logistcs Market

Norfolk Southern Enters Logistics Market Railroad giant Norfolk Southern Corp. has named David T. Lawson president of Modalgistics, its new supply chain services group, which the company said will provide a broad selection of modal and distribution services.

Modalgisitcs will provide transportation, materials management and distribution services in a single package at one price using a range of modes and information support systems for both rail and trucking. Using Norfolk Southern’s 22-state rail network, the company will develop service products combining traditional rail with truck, Norfolk Southern’s Triple Crown Service, warehousing and information services.

In addition, Modalgistics will provide supply chain management solutions using inventory control systems for complete shipment visibility. As part of the new multimodal service, Norfolk Southern will also use its distribution and warehousing network of 174 rail transfer facilities, 124 lumber reload centers, 71 metals distribution centers and four just-in-time rail auto parts centers.

Modalgistics will combine Norfolk Southern's Forest Products, Distribution Services and Automotive Supply Chain groups. Norfolk Southern is a Virginia-based holding company with headquarters in Norfolk that owns a major freight railroad, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, which operates approximately 21,800 miles of rail in 22 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the province of Ontario.
